Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)

APEC Inspection - Australia's Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing experts

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) technology has become the established method for advanced NDT testing applications. Phased Array Techniques allow the user to cover a wider volume of inspection; such as being able to cover the complete span of a weld or part without the need to move or reposition the transducer.

This is possible due to phased array enabling beams to be electronically steered. This advanced technique results in comprehensive imaging of the results showing a cross section of the inspected part. The Inspection Plan shows the operator in 2D and 3D where probes are positioned on the test part, simplifying the inspection set up and providing an inspection reference for reporting. All adjustments to focal laws are instantaneous. Multiple sectorial scans, true top, side and end view extractions, together with C-Scans, are all supported.

Phased array ultrasonic techniques show good reliability of data, aiding in engineering critical assessment.

What Is Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing?

Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is an advanced form of ultrasonic testing that uses a probe containing many small ultrasonic elements, each pulsed independently. By controlling the timing of those pulses, the beam can be electronically steered, focused and swept through the test piece without physically moving the probe. The result is a fast, repeatable inspection that produces detailed cross-sectional images of welds, castings and components — far more information than a single-element ultrasonic probe can provide. For Australian asset owners, PAUT has become the established method for high-integrity weld inspection and engineering critical assessment.

How Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing Works

Each element in a phased array probe is fired in a precisely calculated sequence (a “focal law”), so the combined wavefront can be angled and focused at will. This lets a technician run multiple sectorial scans, true top, side and end views, and C-scans from a single probe position. Encoded scanning records probe position alongside the ultrasonic data, so every indication can be located, sized and re-examined later. Because focal laws update instantly, set-up is quick and the inspection is highly reproducible — which matters when results feed into fitness-for-service or pressure vessel inspection decisions.

Phased Array NDT Applications

Phased array NDT is used wherever weld quality and wall integrity are critical: pipework and pressure equipment in oil, gas and hydrogen plants; structural and storage-tank welds; mining and heavy-industry components; and corrosion mapping of vessels and pipelines. PAUT is frequently paired with time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) for accurate flaw sizing, and complements other methods such as conventional ultrasonic inspection, magnetic particle inspection and eddy current testing within a complete integrity program.

Australian Standards & Compliance

APEC performs phased array ultrasonic testing to the relevant Australian and international standards, including AS 2207 (ultrasonic testing of fusion-welded joints in carbon and low-alloy steel), ISO 13588 (use of automated phased array technology), and the construction and in-service requirements of codes such as AS 1554, AS 4037 and AS/NZS 3788. Working to recognised standards means the inspection report stands up to client, regulator and insurer scrutiny.

PAUT vs Conventional Ultrasonic Testing and Radiography

Compared with conventional ultrasonic testing, PAUT covers more inspection volume per pass, images defects in cross-section, and removes much of the operator variability of manual scanning. Compared with radiography, it needs no exclusion zones or radiation controls, is safer to run alongside other site work, and gives immediate digital results with accurate through-wall sizing. For most modern weld and corrosion inspections, phased array ultrasonic testing delivers more information, faster, and with a stronger audit trail.
